Subject:five past twelve
Time:10:52 am.
I had the privilege of working on the launch of a new novel entitled Five Past Twelve by an up-and-coming writer named Robert Shapiro.

Inspired by J. D Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Five Past Twelve was written over Shapiro’s five years spent as a student at Fanshawe College and York University in Ontario, Canada. The novel forces the reader to rethink material culture and look inward. Shapiro urges you to dig deep and examine the ugliness and insecurities that makes us all human. This is a novel that captures the essence of the “starving student” in a witty, thoughtful and relatable way.

Five Past Twelve narrates the sophomore year of Jack Geary, a student at a Boston college. After returning to school, Jack feels disengaged from his peers and the college experience as a whole. He tries to restrain these feelings by surrendering himself to a cocaine addition, which causes him to spiral out of control.

Over the course of the year, Jack develops an unexpected friendship with the campus priest and engages in a love affair with a student. He skips classes, witnesses the rape of a friend and alienates himself from his peers. Jack battles a world that is plagued by hate, consumerism and the media.

Ultimately, these life-changing events and relationships will force Jack to question his raw emotions, perception of the world and his generation.
